The Economic History of Cilician Armenia: A Paper Presented at the Wittenberg International Conference

Zohrab Gevorgyan, Head of the Department of Medieval History at the Institute of History, participated with a scholarly paper in the 2026 Summer Symposium in Oriental Christian & Armenian Studies, held in Wittenberg, Germany, from May 31 to June 3, 2026, organized by the Mesrop Center for Armenian Studies at Martin Luther University.

The conference brought together researchers from various countries who presented scholarly papers on different periods of Armenian studies, Caucasian studies, Middle Eastern history, and European history. Z. Gevorgyan presented a scholarly paper titled “The ‘Floating’ Finances of the Middle Ages: The ‘Art’ of Mediterranean Trade in Cilician Armenia” and also chaired a session titled “Armenian Church and Oriental Christian Identity”. An important objective of Z. Gevorgyan’s presentation was to situate the economic and everyday-life history within the context of Armenian history. This approach is especially effective since it makes it possible to examine Armenian history within the broader framework of world history and in connection with global historical processes.
