THE DELEGATION OF THE INSTITUTE OF HISTORY OF THE NAS RA PARTICIPATES IN AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND YOUTH SCHOOL HELD IN STAVROPOL, RUSSIAN FEDERATION

On 20–25 October 2025, a delegation from the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NAS RA), headed by the Director of the Institute, Dr. Hist. Sci., Professor, Academician of the NAS RA, Ashot Melkonyan, took part in an international conference entitled “Russia and the Peoples of Transcaucasia in the Context of the Russian–Turkish Wars of the 18th to Early 20th Centuries”, organised by the North Caucasian Federal University in the city of Stavropol, Russian Federation. The conference was dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Sarighamish. Scholars and students from Georgia and various scientific and educational institutions of the Russian Federation also attended the event.

Within the framework of the conference, members of the delegation likewise participated in the proceedings of the Third International Youth School held under the same title.

Academician Ashot Melkonyan delivered a series of lectures within the youth school and to students of the North Caucasus University, as well as a report on “Armenia in the Context of the Demographic Policy of the Russian Empire” during the plenary session of the international conference. He gave interviews to several television channels of the Stavropol Territory and held official meetings with the Rector of the University, Professor Tatyana Shahbuzova; the Head of the Department of World History, Professor Igor Kryuchkov; the Head of the Department of Patriotic History, Professor Marina Kolesnikova; and other colleagues.

Staff members of the Institute of History, Cd. Hist. Sci. Karen Mkrtchyan and Hovik Avanesov, actively participated in the work of the school, contributing to discussions and thematic sessions. Students from Yerevan State University and the Armenian State Pedagogical University named after Kh. Abovyan likewise took part in the events. Reports and lectures were also delivered by Professor Khachatur Stepanyan of the Armenian State Pedagogical University and by the Deputy Director of the Yerevan City History Museum, Lusine Amirjanyan. A short documentary film about Yerevan and the Yerevan City History Museum was screened.

During the visit, the Armenian delegation paid a call to the local Armenian church and met with representatives of the Armenian community of Stavropol. An exchange of views took place regarding the cultural and academic-educational activities of the community and the further strengthening of Armenian–Russian relations.

The Institute of History of the NAS RA attaches great importance to participation in such international platforms, as they contribute to the expansion of scientific relations and cooperation. These initiatives are of particular value for young scholars, providing them with the opportunity to address an international audience, acquire professional experience, and establish scholarly contacts with foreign colleagues.
